Liability of a beneficiary?…..read on:

READER QUESTION:

I am the beneficiary of an account that the deceased used to pay his bills from. Since he passed, am I now responsible to pay any bills for the house until it’s sold? I am speaking about the utilities and taxes. There is a will that I am not included in, and the house goes to his children.

MY RESPONSE:

The practical answer is, “Sorry, kids, your house, your bills.” I would book a trip to Aruba today!

On the other hand, if the children could prove that it was not their parents’ intent to have you inherit the account….that your name was on there for “CONVENIENCE PURPOSES ONLY,” and not inheritance, they might prevail in a lawsuit. But, I wish them luck with this probable and expensive loser.

Enjoy Aruba!

I hope this helps.
