READER QUESTION:

Good morning –

We have always appreciated and thank you for your ongoing and so welcome advice!

My Question –

Is a joint filing by a married couple affected when one of the filers is newly (3 months) on Medicaid? We have filed jointly for 63 years. Thank you.

MY RESPONSE:

The fact that one spouse is on Medicaid does not change the fact that you still must file a joint income tax return. Keep in mind, though, that any income you use to pay for your spouse’s medical care may be deductible if it exceeds 7.5% of your adjusted gross income.
